Nearly 30,000 people visited the Immigrant Yarn Project in San Francisco, and the response was overwhelming. Indeed, it got us thinking about next steps. How could we use the project not just as a popular metaphor for citizenry in this nation composed of diverse backgrounds, families, politics, faiths, identities and ideas - but to actually support immigrants and refugees in peril.
In that spirit, we are partnering with two organizations that are on the ground supporting immigration, fighting hate and promoting tolerance. We are selling a small selection of totems from the Immigrant Yarn Project and donating the proceeds of those sales to RAICES, Texas and the International Rescue Committee.

RAICES, Texas - “We envision a compassionate society where all people have the right to migrate and human rights are guaranteed. As the largest immigration legal services provider in Texas, RAICES has become an organization operating on the frontlines of the fight for immigration rights. At RAICES, we defend the rights of immigrants and refugees, empower individuals, families, and communities, and advocate for liberty and justice. A gift to RAICES ensures a child doesn’t have to represent themselves alone at court, a mother knows her rights, and a refugee family will get a new start.”
International Rescue Committee -provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. With a network of 25 offices in 16 states, the IRC ensures that each of our clients receives the support he or she needs to succeed.
