War Brides

Within weeks of launching the website for the IYP, I received an email from a woman in Massachusetts. She explained to me that her mother had just passed away from the effects of Alzheimer’s. She had lived most of her life in the US, but she was originally from England. Marjorie Bargout came over in the late 40’s as one of over 60,000 war brides that immigrated to the US during or after World War II.

In the last few years of her life, when Alzheimer’s had robbed her of so much, she continued to knit, non-stop as a sort of meditation. Marjorie’s daughter told me she thought her mother would be proud to be represented in the Immigrant Yarn Project. You can see her work in the exhibit on TOTEM 5.
